This Alliance was formed in November, 2000 with an initial goal of developing a network of primary and acute care providers who would provide medical services for the 45,000 uninsured residents of Hinds County Mississippi. The creation of the Alliance was made possible by a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Communities In Charge project. Subsequent funding was provided by the US Department of Health and Human Service Health Resource and Services Administration (HRSA) Community Access Program (CAP).
Through December 31, 2003, this Alliance has been successful in accomplishing the following towards that goal:
1) Created an electronically connected network of primary care providers who serve the uninsured on a sliding fee scale.
2) Established a Rx drug assistance program for needy individuals enrolled in the Alliance.
3) Partnered with the four local hospitals and other agencies in an initiative to reduce the number of individuals who use Emergency Departments for routine primary care. (Summary).
4) Collaborated with McKesson Health Solutions in providing Disease Management services for Medicaid clients who have diabetes, hypertension or asthma.
